Yet another attack by Boko Haram is being reported in Monguno town, Borno State, on Saturday.
The attack comes days after the insurgents kiIIed over 80 persons in some communities in Gubio Local Government Area of the state.
According to SaharaReporters citing security sources, the insurgents came into the village around 1:15pm, shooting sporadically.
Monguno is around 100 km (62 miles) North-East of Maiduguri, Borno State.
It has been repeatedly at*acked by insurgents,.who have made several attempts to overrun the large military base located just outside the town.
Soldiers reportedly responded to the attack but the insurgents who had sneaked into the town were said to have overpowered them.
The security operatives were said to have retreated to the headquarters of sector 3 where they reinforced.
The insurgents and the soldiers are currently exchanging gvnfire, while many residents have fled into the bush.
The escalation in Boko Haram attacks came following a recent claim by the Nigeria Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, who said the military has recorded remarkable success within two months in its fight against insurgents in the troubled northern part of the country.
He said, "The troops are putting in their best and that has resulted in the tremendous successes we are recording. The fight is still ongoing and over 1,429 of this Boko Haram ter*orists have been neutralised and we have arrested over 166 Boko Haram ter*orist informants, their spies, couriers on logistics and their coordinators in the villages, the towns and even the forest.
“We will continue to deal with the situation, not only in the North East, but all other parts of the country. Tremendous successes have been achieved, and we are very happy with what is going on.
“Surely military operations are carried out with plan and the overall plan is to rid the whole of the North-West and other emerging threats that are coming up in other parts of the country especially the North-Central and some areas that hitherto have been quiet.
“We will continue to tackle any form of insecurity that is emerging in collaboration with all other security agencies and our colleagues in the Navy and the Airforce.”
