Despite glaring evidences suggesting the security challenges facing the country is on the rise, even prompting foreign nations to blacklist certain trouble States as a 'no go' area for their citizens living in the country, the Buhari administration still believes there's substantial improvement in the fight against insecurity particularly in the North.
This was disclosed by the Chief of Army Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Gen. Tukur Buratai, at a meeting on Monday.
“There are no Boko Haram terrorists in neighbouring states. They have been pushed out, and now cornered in Borno State,” he said in a statement issued by presidential publicist, Garba Shehu.
“We are coordinating with civil and traditional authorities, mobilising and reinforcing and all we need is patience. We will not relent,” the statement quoted Mr Buratai as telling the president.
According to recent reports, video footage released by Boko Haram, claimed some of its fighters somehow found their way into the Middlebelt and reportedly observed Salah celebration in Niger State.
The footage showed about three fighters sending Eid greetings in Hausa, English and Fulfulde to viewers.
“It is we the Jamahatu Ali Sunna li Dawatul Jihad in the location of Niger State. We want to send our Sallah salutation, first of all to our imam, Abu Muhammad Ibn Abubakar Shekau,” one of the terrorists dressed in a Nigerian police uniform said.
The sect had in June released a new video and confirmed its link with the armed groups operating in the North-West and North-Central part of the country.
If this claim by the group is later confirmed to be true, Buratai’s claim of clearing Boko Haram except for Borno, will once again, be called into question.
The president added that in the wake of security challenges in the region, the administration is launching new combat strategies and acquiring modern military equipment.
“Security will be restored to Borno State, the north-east and the nation at large,” the president said.
