I never planned to rename varsity after Kyari — Gov Uzodinma

Controversial Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has debunked reports claiming he had plans in place to rename the state-owned Imo State University after late Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari University.

In a statement through his chief press secretary, Oguwike Nwachuku, the governor described the viral report as 'fake news'.

Nwachuku said the fake report was an attempt to create disaffection between the government and the people of Imo state. According to the chief press secretary, he was surprised that any right-thinking individual could think of coming up with such a report.

The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Office of the Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the Governor has been drawn to fake news circulating on the social media, purporting that Governor Hope Uzodimma wants to rename Imo State University, Owerri, after the late Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari.

“The author(s) of the fake news had not only credited to the governor what he could not have said, but they criminally wrote the name of his Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser, Mr Oguwike Nwachuku, as the one who signed the purported statement."

Late CoS Abba Kyari succumbed to coronavirus after weeks of battling with the deadly disease which has claimed over 150,000 lives worldwide since it was first reported back in November 2019.

Kyari has since been buried earlier today, Saturday 18th April, at Gudu Cemetery in Abuja.
