Just In: Panic up north following the establishment of Amotekun by Southwest

Nigeria's security situation and the Buhari government’s failure to assure Nigerians of safety, has resulted in the creation regional security network within the country.

The core North is said to have its Hisbah law enforcement officers who operate based on Sharia law, independently of federal security architecture in the country such as the military and police.

While the newly unveiled 'Amotekun' security outfit by the southwest is not religious based, it is however, believed to be motivated by growing insecurity in the country and the unchecked activities of bandits and armed bearing herdsmen in the region.

But there could be more to it though, since Buhari's decision to open up the northern borders to aliens who need no visa to enter the country, is becoming increasingly worrisome. Some believe the policy is aimed at granting free pass to Fulanis and dangerous elements to aide the actualization of Islamization and Fulanization of the country.

The swift reaction by the north, shows it already felt threatened by the establishment of Amotekun for reasons many would say is unsurprising.

National Pivot previously reported that Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has condemned the establishment of Amotekun in the Southwest, calling the move a threat to national peace and security.

The move by the southwest is also believed to likely spur other regions to similarly follow the same initiative by establishing theirs.

This is certainly the case as Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council has called on the southeast governors to emulate their southwest colleagues by creating a joint security outfit for the region.

Whether or not the current Buhari administration will overlook the recent development, is yet to be seen.

On whether or not governors in the north-central will emulate their colleagues in the southwest, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State who met with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa earlier on Friday, said;

“The situation in the south might not be the same with the north but in the north, we are also looking at some ways that will also address these issues. So we have gone ahead to set up committees; those committees have done their work and we are going to meet to address these issues once and for all.

“Two, we have also agreed to key into the community policing and at the level of the committee, we have already gone far. Each state is already neck-deep in community policing. But I have not read the document, I cannot claim to have read the details of that document to understand what they mean by Amotekun.

“I saw various vehicles that were bought but you know if it’s about vehicles, many vehicles have been bought in the north. I bought almost 100 vehicles and gave to the police but that is not what will address the insecurity in my state.

 “So, it may vary from south to the north but in the north, we are trying to look for comprehensive ways that will help augment what the federal government is doing in respect to insecurity.”
