It's still a hot topic! And one only need to look at those sponsoring the so called Social Media or Hate Speech Bills, to understand the uproar. The question of who exactly the bill is meant for is something Nigerians would want to understand. Merely saying misinformation and hate speeches isn't enough.
In Nigeria, a court can sentence a man who steals a tuber of yam to 10 years imprisonment and in some cases, to death. The opposite is the case however, when it comes to the corrupt elites especially those in power who steal in billions, yet go about their normal businesses. So the poor masses are compelled to ask, 'who exactly are the laws made for?'
Oshiomhole's choice of words, justified the United Nation's recent statement asking the Buhari administration to work on itself and politicians in country whom the UN consider to be responsible for the spread of hate and misinformation in order to further their political ambitions.
A friend of mine who is an ardent supporter of the hate speech bill to 'punish hate speakers' is calling those who are opposed to it as 'idiots' 'stupid' 'lunatics' and 'fools'.— Senator Shehu Sani (@ShehuSani) November 23, 2019
Nigerians are wary of the Buhari administration whom they have come to distrust over the years for its disregard for the rule law and court orders. In fact, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, recently said no amount of outrage will stop the Buhari administration from pushing forward its plan to regulate the Social Media. The minister's comment is a true representation of the Buhari administration which has no regard for the voices of those who elected them to power.
