Those shouting in support of Social Media bills are the ones who deserved to be hanged — Sani

It's still a hot topic! And one only need to look at those sponsoring the so called Social Media or Hate Speech Bills, to understand the uproar. The question of who exactly the bill is meant for is something Nigerians would want to understand. Merely saying misinformation and hate speeches isn't enough.

Amnesty International Nigeria said it is very concerned about the tendency to manipulate and abuse the bills by those in government to serve certain personal interests. This is exactly where the problem comes from.

In Nigeria, a court can sentence a man who steals a tuber of yam to 10 years imprisonment and in some cases, to death. The opposite is the case however, when it comes to the corrupt elites especially those in power who steal in billions, yet go about their normal businesses. So the poor masses are compelled to ask, 'who exactly are the laws made for?'

In a recent post published yesterday, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, used the vulgar word 'Stubborn Senator' to describe Dino Melaye of Kogi West, leaving Nigerians to wonder where exactly that one fits it in the bill.

Oshiomhole's choice of words, justified the United Nation's recent statement asking the Buhari administration to work on itself and politicians in country whom the UN consider to be responsible for the spread of hate and misinformation in order to further their political ambitions.

Being one of Buhari's ardent critics and a former Senator, Shehu Sani is also among prominent voices in the country against the Social Media and Hate Speech Bills presently before the Senate. He said, those clamoring for the passage of the bills are themselves guilty of same crimes but as usual, know exactly who they are targeting with these bills and not themselves.

He said, "A friend of mine who is an ardent supporter of the hate speech bill to 'punish hate speakers' is calling those who are opposed to it as 'idıots' 'stupıd' 'lunatıcs' and 'foòls'."

Nigerians are wary of the Buhari administration whom they have come to distrust over the years for its disregard for the rule law and court orders. In fact, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, recently said no amount of outrage will stop the Buhari administration from pushing forward its plan to regulate the Social Media. The minister's comment is a true representation of the Buhari administration which has no regard for the voices of those who elected them to power.

Aggrieved Nigerians who feel misrepresented at the National Assembly, are working out plans to mobilize 1,000,000 Nigerians across the country under the movement tagged "Occupy Nigeria Season II" should the National Assembly disregard public outcry against the proposed bills.
