Unless what is burning Nigeria is not fire, it makes no sense to run away — Sani

Sen. Shehu Sani thinks withdrawal from security roundtable by southern leaders was wrong.
The lingering security challenges facing the country has reached a tipping point and everyone knows it. This probably explains why the Buhari administration holds regular security meetings albeit without any meaning result to show for it.

There has been no shortage reactions by concerned Nigerians from all quarters of the nation following Buhari's inability to improve the overall climate in the country. Poverty aside, Nigerians aren't even sure of the next minute.

In view of the situation on ground, the nation's past leaders have added their voices on the fragile state of the nation, with former President Obasanjo recently got himself into trouble with his letter to the President.

The latest attempt to discuss the current security challenges facing the nation, has led to the organizing of a security roundtable meeting by ormer Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (GCFR). The meeting which is scheduled to hold in Minna, Niger state on 29th – 30th July, 2019 however, is facing a backlash as Southern and Middle Belt leaders on Sunday turned down the call to participate in security roundtable over inclusion of Miyetti Allah.

The group in a letter written to former Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (GCFR), condemned the Buhari government for what they termed the “inappropriate lumping of nationality organisations in the same vehicle with organisations such as Miyetti Allah”.

While there's legitimacy in concerns expressed by the group, not everyone thinks withdrawing from the security roundtable was a good move by the group.

Senator Shehu Sani in his reaction to the group's withdrawal, said running away from a fire, is not the way to quench it.

He tweets, "Ohaneze, Afenifere, Middle Belt and Niger Delta leaders should not leave the table because of the Miyetti Allah group. You can’t contain or extinguish what you consider a fire by moving away from it."

The group in its letter said, "The lumping of Miyetti Allah, a trade association for cattle herders and whose members have been accused of various violations of rights, including life, across the country sends worrying signal to us."

The group said the categorisation of its 'respected socio-cultural platforms' with Miyetti Allah by Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu, is unacceptable as it suggests there's no difference between nationality organizations and trade groups which Miyetti Allah actually is.
