It's been barely hours since report of Buhari's impeachment threat was made public, but rumors are already making the rounds that President Muhammadu Buhari has already written his resignation letter.
Senate minority leader, Senator Philip Aduda, had disclosed at a press briefing, after he and his colleagues staged a walkout from the Chambers in anger, that they have issued President Muhammadu Buhari six weeks to resolve terrorist attacks in the country or face impeachment.
Aduda who represents the Federal Capital Territory in the upper legislative Chamber said: “We went into a closed-door session on the state of insecurity in Abuja and took cognisance that Nigeria is no longer safe
“Senate has recommended various measures and discovered that even Abuja is no longer safe.
“We agreed in the closed session that we will give President Muhammadu Buhari an ultimatum, but the Senate President Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan didn’t want us to raise the issue.
“However, we have issued six weeks for President Buhari to resolve insecurity or be impeached.
“We walked out of Chambers in protest.”
Our reporter in Kaduna State who reported the resignation rumor, said residents familiar with the rumor, seem excited, and hope it turns out to be true.
He said some of the people he spoke with on the matter, were quite angry over the escalating security challenges in the country, and the failure of the Buhari government to stem the tide.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has held an emergency close door meeting with his security chiefs on Thursday.
The NSC meeting at the Council Chambers is being attended by Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Boss Mustapha; the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (retd).
Others are the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema; Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi; Minister of Defense, Major General Bashir Magashi (Rtd).
Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao; and the Chief of Defense Intelligence, Major General Samuel Adebayo, are also in attendance.
Also in attendance are the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman; the Director-General of the Department of State Service (DSS), Yusuf Bichi; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar.
