The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, has said President Muhammadu should have known better that no government can survive by turning the people against its own self.
The Yoruba monarch who stated this in a statement signed by his media aide, Kehinde Aderemi, said the Buhari administration has by arresting Nnamdi Kanu, and Sunday Igboho, has already established that agitators are criminals — a situation he said only creates more anger and hatred against the government.
“Igboho’s case is gradually exposing FG’s plan to clamp down on all agitators and that is undemocratic, and also capable of turning government to tyranny of the majority, especially, from a government that came to power with a lot of hope and support from the people of the South-West,” he stated.
He warned that maltreating Igboho could lead to war, urging the Muhammadu Buhari administration to approach the case with fairness.
“I think the FG should be fair to the young man because any attempt to trivialize issues of agitations might set this nation on fire.
“For example, the issue of self determination didn’t come up overnight. It was as a result of the long years of injustice, nepotism, and corruption occasioned by bad leadership.
“So, the FG will be making a big mistake if it decides to treat agitators of Yoruba nation as common criminals or enemies.
“Igboho has a right to his freedom. There is nothing bad for him to seek asylum in Republic of Benin, and he is entitled to seek refuge in a foreign land if he thinks his safety cannot be guaranteed here in Nigeria,” Adams stated.
Meanwhile, Yoruba socio-cultural group, Voice of Reason (VoR), has said all Yoruba working with the Buhari government to destroy the Southwest, will soon look for where to run to at the end of Buhari's tenure.
The group which accused the Buhari government of using insecurity to incapacitate the Yoruba, politically and economically, warned that attempts to reduce the Southwest to nothingness will not succeed, and that the demand for restructuring will not stop.
The statement was released by the group's Chairman, Dr Olufemi Adegoke, who also said the constant pursuit of Sunday Igboho by the Buhari government, is an act of provocation against the Yoruba.
“Our message is to our compatriots who are occupiers of political offices under the current regime and others in the dominant parties who intend to waste resources on another bid to be favoured with crumbs i.e tickets to contest the 2023 elections. The political parties have a timeless and do-nothing agenda that is patently obvious to the blind."
On the ordeal of Sunday Igboho whom they described as a 'freedom fighter, the statement says, “Recently, the DSS executed an illegal midnight attack on the home of Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho in the Yoruba heartland that resulted in the death of two innocent citizens of Nigeria with the obvious intent to silence the renowned Yoruba freedom fighter. All right-thinking persons have condemned this descent into despotism. One can see the abysmal level to which the country has sunk. This is provocative and unacceptable to the Yoruba."
