Visa ban: Our own laws and courts did not find those on your list, guilty of any wrong doings — FG replies US and allies

The Buhari administration has on Friday, responded to actions taken by the United States and its allies, against the Nigerian nation, particularly some high profile politicians in the country whom they handed visa ban over electoral fraud and other misconducts.

The Federal Government in a statement signed by the spokesman of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye, said Nigeria as a sovereign nation should be respected and allow its own laws to take its cause instead of foreign governments acting as the judge and overruling cases already settled internally.

He further explained that there were ample provisions in the nation's laws to sanction violators and perpetrators of electoral violence and fraud.

The statement says, "It would be considered disrespectful of the sovereignty of Nigeria for any outside authority to sit in judgment over the conduct of our citizens and apply punitive measures such as visa restriction, unilaterally."

The FG further highlighted that the responsibility for the conduct of elections in Nigeria solely resides with the Independent National Electoral Commission and State Independent Electoral Commissions.

"While we appreciate the support and encouragement of our international partners such as the European Union, we urge our equally valued partners such as the UK and US to cooperate with our relevant agencies by providing them whatever concrete evidence of observed misconduct to allow our laws and regulations to take their course," the government stated.

The government also spoke on the coming US election saying it hopes it would be "free from interference and violence."
