Police to the rescue following kiIIing and abduction of soldiers by Boko Haram

It's been years of seemingly unending battles between Boko Haram and the Nigerian military whose mandate to ensure the country is safe from both foreign and domestic threats, has been heavily tested by the activities of Boko Haram, bandits, among others.

While questions on whether or not Boko Haram are too powerful for the Nigerian Army to defeat, continues to perplex Nigerians, recent developments from the military, including reports of mass resignation of troops, citing loss of morale as reason, seem to have summed things up, giving Nigerians an idea why Boko Haram still exist.

In a recent report by PRNigeria, Boko Haram successfully overpowered the Nigerian troops, kiIIing some security personnel, abduct others, and carted away with military equipments.

But, thanks to the Police Counter-Terrorism operatives, two soldiers who were earlier abducted by Boko Haram fighters in Borno State, were said to have been rescued.

This came after Nigerian troops had also repelled an attempt by terrorists to seize an Army barracks in Maiduguri on Monday.

A Situation Report (SITREP) says that “at 2:30p.m. o July 13, 20120, an Army patrol team was attacked by Boko Haram on Auno Road.

(The terrorists) kiIIed two soldiers and kidnapped others while carting away two of the military’s gun trucks, AK47 rifles and unspecified number of ammunition.

“Counter-Terrorism Unit of the Nigeria Police on pin down point (operation), at the area went after the terrorists. After a gun battle, (the police) recovered one gun-truck, rifles and rescued two soldiers.

“All exhibits handed over to the Commissioner of Police Command.”

Meanwhile the House of Representatives in a resolution passed in Tuesday's plenary, called for investigation into issues arising from the Nigerian Army following reports of mass resignations.

The house which says the disturbing situation is sign of an 'impending menace' mandated the Committee on Army to investigate the issues raised by the Chief Whip of the house, Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno), and report back in one week for further legislative actions.
