Great anxiety as over 60 people were allegedly buried in less than 48 hours in Kano

Nigerians were left in shock following a yet to be verified claimed that not less than 61 people had died in Kano State from Saturday to early hours of Sunday according to a Facebook post shared by a resident believed to be from Kano State.

The lady who shared the post, Maryam Shetty, claimed not fewer than 43 people were buried in what is likely a mass grave on Saturday, while in the early hours of Sunday, about 18 more bodies were buried in the same cemetery.


Apparently shocked by the unfortunate incident, Shetty said she was left bemused by the actually cause of such huge number of deaths within less than two days, in the State.

The post reads, "What could possibly be killing them? Yesterday in Kano 43 people were buried in a single cemetery, this morning 18 have already been buried there."


The post which generated massive reaction saw commenters demanding for an investigation into the issue and the cause of such massive deaths.



One user, Zainab Mahmud Ibrahim, said, "Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun, Maryam Shetty this calls for investigation by health experts (NCDC). Thier relatives and possibly the hospital they visited should be questioned to ascertain cause of death particularly now that we are in this trying times."

Kano overtook Ogun State to become the third most hit State with covid-19 cases, trailing only Abuja and Lagos with the highest number of cases respectively. It is however, unlikely that these deaths if confirmed, would be covid-19 related.


One likely explanation could be the effects of government lockdown which has left millions of families battling with hunger due to lack of money to keep their families afloat as the Buhari administration tries to get covid-19 under control.



The Buhari government had pledged to provide palliatives to help cushion the effects of the lockdown on vulnerable families. But it is yet unclear whether those who needed the palliatives have been reached by those in charge of distributions of relief supplies to the poor masses.
