COVID-19 has shown that Nigeria does not have intelligent people on power — Aborisade

Comrade Femi Aborisade, a lawyer, human rights activist, and the pioneer National Secretary of the National Conscience Party (NCP), has added his voice to the list of critics who accused the Buhari administration of acting foolishly by copying measures adopted by western nations in their fight against the spread of coronavirus, whilst at the same time, ignore the responsibilities which accompanies such measures.

The rights activist said if the Buhari government cannot take care of the people it confined to their homes, then the purpose of declaring a lockdown has been defeated.

He said, "The lockdown being declared by the federal and state governments may be necessary but governments appear not to have given a thought to what they ought to put in place for a successful lockdown.

"They are uncreatively emulating the Western world without putting in place the social security schemes upon which lockdowns in Europe and elsewhere are built.

"There is no arrangement to ensure access to food, water, healthcare, sanitation and income security, among others for ordinary people who live by the day.

"In the circumstances, the lockdown would be obeyed at the risk of having people dying of hunger or disease or the people would be compelled to defy the lockdown when driven by hunger to go out in search of means of livelihood. Hunger-virus is as deadly as COVID-19.

Latest data by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), showed the country now has 210 confirmed cases of Coronavirus with four recorded deaths. On the bright side, 25 people who have recovered from the disease, have been discharged.
