How can there be peace and unity in a country whose president rationalise kiIIings? — Atiku reacts

Former vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has reacted to Buhari's claim that 90 percent v*ctims of Boko Haram attacks are Muslims. He wonders why such careless statements are made by people who should know better, and who continue to call for a peaceful coexistence in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari has in an opinion piece published in “Speaking Out” a guest opinion column for Christianity Today, admitted that his administration is yet to actually defeat Boko Haram despite initial claim of technically defeating the te**orists group. The President however, said most of the reports about Christian persecution in the country are false.

He said, “We may not, yet, be completely winning the battle for the truth. Christianity in Nigeria is not-as some seem intent on believing-contracting under pressure, but expanding and growing in numbers approaching half of our population today. Nor is it the case that Boko Haram is primarily targeting Christians: not all of the Chibok schoolgirls were Christians; some were Muslims, and were so at the point at which they were taken by the te**orists.

“Indeed, it is the reality that some 90 per cent of all Boko Haram’s v*ctims have been Muslims: they include a copycat abd*ction of over 100 Muslim schoolgirls, along with their single Christian classmate; sh**tings inside mosques; and the m*rder of two prominent imams. Perhaps it makes for a better story should these truths, and more, be ignored in the telling."

In his own reaction to the report via his Facebook page, Atiku said," We must not rationalise kiIIıngs. Whether Christian, Muslim, Traditionalist, or Atheist, the kiIIıng of any human being, by Boko Haram, or any other misguided group, is wrong and should be condemned unequivocally. There is no compulsion in religion. Only love."

There has been growing concerns over reports of Christian persecution in the country with the United States adding Nigeria in a Special Watch List of countries suppressing religious freedoms.

While the Buhari administration alongside Islamic groups in the country repeatedly deny claims of Christian persecution in the country especially since Buhari became president, the truth however, remains that acts of te**orism were carried out against Christians by not only Boko Haram, but also kiIIer herdsmen since 2015, with no single arrest and prosecution done by the ruling government.
