UNESCO warn Trump over Iranian Cultural sites


Yesterday, Sunday 5th, saw tense exchanges between the United States and Iran as the latter vowed to avenge its slain military general by the United States last week.



The United States President Donald Trump who is wary of a possible retaliation by Iran, advised the Middle Eastern country not to dare otherwise, 52 identified targets would be hit. Among these targets, is Iranian Cultural sites under the protection UNESCO.

Following Trump's threat, UNESCO on Monday reminded the American president that the U.S. has signed treaties committing it not to harm cultural heritage in the event of armed conflict.




The UN cultural body said that under provisions of the 1954 and 1972 conventions – which have been ratified by both the U.S. and Iran.


The signatory states undertake not to take any deliberate measures which might damage cultural and natural heritage on the territory of other states party to those conventions.
