Plateau: A country where there is no justice is a fertile land for criminals — Atiku

Atiku Abubakar
Citizens cannot be safe in a society where criminals are not facing justice. Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has said.

Atiku stated this in response to the renewed a*tacks in Plateau and Taraba States.

Recall that over 17 people were k*lled by unknown gunmen on Sunday around Kwatas village in Bokkos LGA of Plateau State.

However, Atiku said Nigeria’s justice system should ensure that criminals who were caught in heinous crime were meted with adequate punishments.

A statement by his Media Aide, Paul Ibe reads: “A society with a derelict justice system is a fertile land for misconduct, according to a popular Africa adage.

“To be sure that we are one step ahead of criminals who pose existential threats to our internal security, it is important that we empower our justice system with the belief that when stiff punishments are handed down on these criminals, there will be a deterrence for a repeat of this nature of crime.

“So, there is no deterrence to such crimes. Justice is thus key to promoting peace in our communities.

“If you give people the confidence that anyone who breaks the law will be found and made to face the full wrath of the law, then people will be less inclined to promote violence and the k*llings that come with it.”

Meanwhile, some angry youths in Plateau state on Tuesday stormed a Fulani settlement and sets over 23 houses and a mosque on fire.

According to Daily Nigerian, the youths carried out the a*tack as a reprisal following the recent k*lling of over 17 indigenes by suspected armed herdsmen in Kwatas village of Bokkos local government area of the state.

The state chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, and a sister Fulani organisation, GAN Allah Association, confirmed the attack to journalists on Tuesday, January 28.

“We urge the security agencies to always do its homework before any declaration,” MACBAN caretaker chairman, Isa Bappa, said.

“It is equally regrettable for some youth in Kwatas to launch an a*tack on Fulani communities as a reprisal. Both incidents are barbaric and condemnable.

“We call on the security agencies in the state to as a matter of urgency ensure the arrest of the perpetrators all the attacks,” he added.
