Amotekun: One day this nonsense would end — Fani-Kayode replies Buhari

It's been a week like no other as the Buhari administration finally passed its verdict on the establishment of Amotekun by the Southwest in order to curb security challenges within the region.

While the creation of Amotekun is logically sound, it does however, generated lots of controversy and condemnations by Northern groups who call the move illegal and a threat to national peace.

The Buhari administration in a statement yesterday, signed by the Special Adviser to the AGF on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Gwandu, said the establishment of Amotekun is unconstitutional and illegal.

The statement says, “The setting up of the paramilitary organisation called Amotekun is illegal and runs contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian law.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) has established the army, navy and air force, including the police and other numerous paramilitary organisations for the purpose of the defence of Nigeria.

“As a consequence of this, no state government, whether singly or in a group has the legal right and competence to establish any form of organisation or agency for the defence of Nigeria or any of its constituent parts."

But Fani Kayode who showed his full support and appreciation for the establishment of Amotekun, disagrees with Buhari administration saying constitutional provisions must not be applied when it satisfies certain interests.

He said the Hisbah Police in North West cannot be constitutional while Amotekun is not. Same with the Civilian Joint Task Force in North West and Civilian Joint Task Force in North East.

Meanwhile securing outfit in the South like IPOB and Amotekun are generally considered unconstitutional because some people in the North have secret agendas and wouldn't want to be resisted. He however, said that a day will come when this nonsense would end.

He said, "One day Nigerians will get tired of this bullshit, get sense and free themselves from this insufferable bondage.

"The bitter truth is that what the Federal Government has done by claiming that Amotekun is illegal is to strengthen the hand and harden the resolve of the more radical and forceful elements and the more extreeme nationalist forces in the South West who have always challenged the erroneous notion, flawed logic and questionable assumption that the unity of Nigeria is not only settled but also sacrosanct.

"If you say that we cannot defend ourselves and our people from tribal and religious bigots, ethnic cleansers, genocidal maniacs, barbarous savages, bloodthirsty jihadists, blood-lusting terrorists, racial supremacists and cold-blooded mass murderers simply because we are southerners then to hell with your Nigerian unity."
