AMOTEKUN: Count me and my group out — AYCF President Shettima reacts

Arewa Youths leader, Yerima Shettima
The President of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima Shettima, has expressed support for the newly inaugurated security outfit in the South-West code-named (Amotekun).

Shettima disclosed this Contrary to insinuation in some quarters that he was against the establishment of the security outfit, urging Nigerians to disregard such false information.

He said that he and his group are in total support of the newly inaugurated security outfit.

In a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday, Shettima said if the federal government cannot put measures in place to secure lives and property of Nigerians, state or regional efforts to secure citizens should not be opposed.

“I am an advocate of Community Policing. If I now come out to condemn the inauguration of Amotekun in the South-west, that is counter productive.

“So, I commend the initiative and I will encourage the citizens to cooperate with the system to ensure effective operation which certainly will bring about secured society,” Shettima stated.

While urging the Nothern Governors Forum (NGF) to come up with a similar programme constitutionally recognised to protect the North, Shettima added that “it is a good thing that even the North-west governors are already thinking along that direction.”

Recall that Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) had condemned the establishment of the new security outfit code-named (Operation Amotekun) in Southwest.

The boby argued that the move was a threat to national peace and security.

They stressed that the new security outfit is in the same league with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The statement read: “We appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari not to allow this unconstitutionality to prevail. The Southwest Governors must desist from backing nefarious groups such as this one.

“Amotekun is a threat to peace and national security, and an attempt to jeopardize Nigeria’s sovereignty.

“The Amotekun group is not different from Boko Haram and the IPOB Movement in their formative stages. The Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army and DSS should not take this lightly with the Governors”.

“NYCN calls on the National Security Adviser to promptly take steps that will avert the looming threat to our national security deliberately created by Governors of Southwest, OPC and others.”
