What happened in Kogi State is shameful — Saraki

Election they say, comes and goes. However, in Nigeria, the bitter aftermath of every election never goes away.

It has been said countless times that election is not a war, but the reality speaks otherwise. And the recent one held in Kogi and Bayelsa States, is no different!

Speaking of Kogi State in particular, the news is an extremely sad one. Gunshots were fired, and lives were lost! But it must be said that all these were expected. It's how elections are conducted in Nigeria, and the very reason calls for electoral reforms still rents the air.

Even INEC boss, Prof. Attahiru Jega, acknowledged the urgency of an electoral reform if Nigeria must find headway as a serious democracy. He said the current system is flawed and cannot produce credible leaders as long as violence is now seemingly part of the electoral process.

A very disturbing video of attack on voters in Kogi State was shared by the PDP on its official Facebook page. You can't watch the video and not weep for Nigeria, but it's the sad reality of what Nigerians have come to terms with.

Former Senate President in the 8th Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, who obviously has been following developments from yesterday's elections, expressed sadness over attacks and voter intimidation in Kogi State.

He said irrespective of party affiliations, violence recorded in Kogi election must be condemned.

He said, "Elections should not be a war, and political affiliations should never silence the voices of reason and peace. We must rise above party affiliations to roundly condemn the scale of violence we are seeing in Kogi State."

Meanwhile collation of results is still ongoing in the two States, with the ruling party APC boasting of victory in the two States.
