The recent governorship elections held in both Kogi and Bayelsa State respectively on Saturday, has been described as one of the worse elections ever conducted in the country due to unprecedented levels of violence, thuggery and voter intimidation recorded in the two States, according to the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room.
He said, “With particular reference to the elections in Kogi State, the levels of violence perpetrated by the two major political parties and politicians, evident sometimes in the collusion with security personnel, seriously undermined the elections, deterred voters and made the exercise a farce.
He said the violence made it difficult for voters to observe the usual practice of staying back after voting to observe counting and collation.

For the governorship elections in Bayelsa state, Nwankwo said the Situation Room also witnessed “serious lapses, with high levels of violence perpetrated by political parties again in collusion with security personnel and reports of “community voting” – a practice whereby political parties controlling particular areas compel overwhelming votes in favour of their party.”
