I see total danger if Buhari decides to run for a third term — Babatope

President Muhammadu Buhari’s purported third term ambition is still a subject of discourse despite the President's recent recent statement refuting the claim.

He said, “I’m not going to make the mistake of attempting a third term. Beside the age, I swore by the holy book that I would go by the constitution and the constitution said two terms."

But not everyone takes Buhari's words seriously, not even former Minister for Transport and BoT member, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Ebenezer Babatope.

Babatope in a recent interview with the Daily SUN, said he's not surprised abouts claims suggesting Buhari may intend to go for a third term. He also said he won't be surprised if the president who like other politicians who speak from both sides of their mouths, decides to change his mind despite saying he would stick by the constitution.

He however, wonders why Buhari would want to remain in power beyond 2023 despite God being 'so kind to him" right from his days as a former state Governor.

He said, "I know he has done that (declared publicly that he has no intention of running for a third term) but anything can happen between now, and 2023. In politics anything can happen.

"Buhari’s aides may drag him into it. The Senate President, and some members of the National Asembly, and some of his associates may drag him.

"They will tell Buhari that he is the best President ever in the history of the country. They will tell him what will be sweet to his ears. But I want Buhari to leave honourably after finishing his second term.

"He is already 77 years old. What else does he want again? God has been so kind to him. He was a former state governor, a former Minister, and also a former military Head of state.

"Buhari should know that Nigeria is greater than all of us. There is danger in third term for him. I see total danger ahead if he succumbs to any temptation to run for a third term," he said.
