Nigeria's 59th Independence Anniversary is around the corner and reactions from different quarters continue to pour especially now that the unity of the country became a hot topic throughout the 58th year.
Unless you are from the ruling camp, there's a general belief that the country is simply not working either because it was founded on a wrong foundation, or that successive leadership has over the years, derailed from the dreams of the Nigerian founding fathers.
While it is difficult to tell exactly where the derailment began, we can all however, agree that agitations from parts of the country calling for disintegration or restructuring did not start overnight. Some even argued that Nigeria's current woes is not unconnected to the fact that we've had to live with a false sense of unity right from the very beginning of the union.
Regardless of the current outcry and agitations in the country, calls to keep hope alive and remain committed to the Nigerian project is the heart of the messages to Nigerians by its leaders as the country marks its 59th Independence Anniversary.
Senator Shehu Sani however, expresses sadness over the stalling of the nation's progress over the years due to effects of bad leadership. He said at 59, the dreams of a better and prosperous Nigeria has been shattered by leaders who put their personal interests first before that of the country.
He said, "Nigeria @ 59; The dreams of our founding fathers was shattered by our pounding fathers."
