How long are we going to continue pretending that Nigeria will work? This is a question you've probably come across multiple times.
Nigeria only recently celebrated its 59th years of independence from British rule in the year 1960. Prior to this, the country was put together by the same colonial masters some decades earlier in 1914. You can call it amalgamation as it is popularly known.
However, many years down the line, it continuously become clearer that the process and arrangements which led to the unification of the Northern and Southern protectorates over a century ago, was greatly flawed and is the reason the country is still struggling to find its feet in the comity of developed nations.
The already injured relationship between the North and Southern part of the country over the years was made even worse with the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari as President in 2015.
The President who's style of leadership has created a tense atmosphere in the country, seem unmoved by the fact that his "delusional" government thinks all is well when in fact, it's far from it.
As you probably may have known, there has never been more calls for restructuring or segregation since independence than it is under the Buhari administration. It is in fact as though everyone is tired and wants out of the union save the North.
The above sentiment was shared by Fani Kayode who said whoever thinks those wanting out of the union are less than those who want to stay, should simply call for a referendum to settle the matter once and for all.
In a post shared on his Facebook page, Kayode said, "Europe is making it difficult for the Unitrd Kingdom to leave just as Nigeria is making difficult for the Biafrans and Oduduwans to leave.
"If those that want to stay in Nigeria in the South East and South West are more than those that wish to leave then let there be a referendum. I challenge the Federal Government to allow one!"
Will there ever be a referendum? Only time will tell.
