Breaking: Atiku, Buhari to know fates as Supreme Court sets date for hearing

A date has finally been set for the hearing of appeal filed by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate in the February 23rd presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, against the ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on September 11th, which upheld the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the last election.

According to announcement posted by the PDP on its official Facebook page, the party said, the Supreme Court has set Wednesday, October 30, 2019, for the commencement of the hearing.

A resolute Atiku has determined to not yield to calls to concede defeat as did former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

Alongside the PDP, Atiku has taken his battle to the Supreme Court following what critics regarded as miscarriage of justice by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal last September.

The appeal court in its ruling, dismissed Atiku's petition challenging Buhari's qualification to contest in the last election saying "There is no doubt he is not only qualified but also eminently qualified to contest the election.”

The PDP in its reaction to the ruling, rejected PEPT's ruling and subsequently filed a 70 point appeal as it seeks justice at the Supreme Court.

There's, however, the fear that Justice at the Supreme Court may not be delivered due to an alleged plot to influence the selection of the most senior justices to hear the case.

in a statement by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Representatives, it said, “Chief Justices of Nigeria through time have never in the selection of the Supreme Court surrendered to the phoney dictates of the ruling parties.

“We are proud to state here that, never in our great party’s time in power did it or its personages, dictate selection of panel members to Chief Justices. Never!

“What isn’t conventional is the present attempt to influence Chief Justice Ibrahim Tanko, going by reports in the media, to subvert the age-long and time-tested practice, precedent and convention of selecting the most senior Justices of the Supreme Court to hear the presidential election panel,” the caucus alleged.
