Abubakar Tsav faults negotiating with bandits. |
Amnesty was in large part, alien to Nigeria until late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua granted one to Niger Delta militants about a decade ago. Since then, we've seen amnesty granted to "repentant Boko Haram" members and now bandits.
While the current Buhari and state governments see amnesty as an easier solution to tacking insecurity in the country, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, thinks otherwise, calling it a "dangerous development which must be discouraged."
Tsav who made the statement during an interview with the SUN, said, negotiating and granting amnesty to bandits is another form of promoting the crimes they are trying to end.
He said, "It is a dangerous development which must not be encouraged. It is like promoting crime. How do you explain it? Amnesty for bandits?
"This is abnormal, it should not be encouraged because it may have a boomerang effect. With effective policing, insecurity can be tackled.
"But as of today, Nigeria is seriously under-policed. We need to recruit more policemen. The United Nations recommended ratio is 1 police officer to 400 civilians, but in Nigeria today, the ratio is 1 police officer to 1000 civilians. Federal Government should recruit more officers and men," he said.
