You won't be President forever — Ezekwesili tells Buhari

Oby Ezekwesili
It's barely two days since the #RevolutionNow protest began, but it seem we already have a Victor.

The Buhari administration has already thanked Nigerians for boycotting yesterday's protest which it said is illegal, and not the right channel to express their grievances on what they called bad governance in the country. The FG also said in a statement, that no amount of protest can remove Buhari as president, except through the process that made him president in the first place.

However, despite warnings by the Police and arrests by the DSS, Nigerians still made sure the world knows the true nature of Buhari's presidency by summoning the courage to hold its planned protest despite facing stiff resistance. They were attacked, harassed and tear gased all day until it became almost impossible to continue with the protest.

Then came the sad moment when the Buhari presidency felt some sense of accomplishment for suppressing free speech and the rights of Nigerians to match against bad governance in the country.

The conduct of the Buhari administration on the #RevolutionNow protest has attracted condemnation from human rights activists including prominent voices like Oby Ezekwesili, among others.

Ezekwesili said it is on record, that those in position of authority must never forget that their position is temporal, and that the citizens they harass and violated their rights will always outlive their time in office.

"Yes. It is important for the Nigerian Police, DSS and Aso Rock officials to read this tweet below and know that Citizens will ALWAYS outlive their time in office. BBOG has thus far survived 5 FCT Police Commissioners. Citizenship is for Life. Office? Not at all," she wrote a tweet.

Protest has been recognized as a global practice and most common way of expressing grievances against certain government policies, actions and inaction. That the Nigerian presidency celebrates harassment, arrests and brutality against protesters all in a bid to get them off the streets, tells you everything you'd need to know about the kind of democracy we practice in the country.
