One can argue that it's not been the best of times for Nigeria not only because Buhari is President, but because Nigerians themselves are believed to an integral part of the myriads of problems currently facing the country. But irrespective of who is to blame, we all at least, will agree that passing blames doesn't solve problems, that is, if you consider how Buhari administration which spent its first term in office attacking previous administration has fared.

But the new House of Reps Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, thinks the media has played a major role in worsening the many challenges facing the country.

The House Speaker while addressing Journalists in the National Assembly on Wednesday in Abuja, says journalists and media practitioners should focus more on investigative journalism instead of spreading fake news.

According to a report by Daily Times, the House Speaker observed that “sometimes you see screaming headlines, but the body of the story has no relationship with it,” adding that some reports attribute such stories to anonymous sources and in most cases, the stories are inaccurate.

The speaker therefore, urged journalists to report whatever they see whether positive or negative about the National Assembly, saying that there is the need for accuracy and truth in the joint task of nation building by the government and the media.

Gbajabiamila promised to work with the media for the development of the nation by providing basic facilities and the enabling environment for the practitioners.

He said that there would be major reforms in the House which might hurt some individuals, but the media should report objectively as it would be for the ultimate good of the country.

The Buhari administration as previously reported, had also blamed 'fake news' as one of the major problem undermining the achievements of his administration. He said since the media is meant to inform the masses on activities of government, it is easier to turn the people against government by the kind of information they publish.
