#RevolutionNow: Sowore may have miscalculated

Omoyele Sowore is in detention for staging a protest against the Buhari administration.
This is obviously not the best of times for Omoyele Sowore as his ordeal seem to be heading north. The Presidency, his party, and those he offended in the past, it's almost as though the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), miscalculated.

While many would argue that it's one of those prices one has to pay in other to fix a problem he helped to create, history will perhaps, be kind to Sowore who summoned the will for whatever it was that motivated him, to lead a struggle he knows very well would be a difficult task. But his party has no praises for his daring effort against the misnomer of the Buhari administration.

News coming from the African Action Congress (AAC) National Convention held at Rockview Hotel, Owerri on Friday, says its National Chairman, Mr. Omoyele Sowore and 28 other members have been expelled from the party for anti party activities and bringing the party into disrepute through his actions.

Sowore who is currently in detention for his part in the #RevolutionNow protest, has since been replaced by Dr. Leonard Nzenwa.

In his speech after taking over Sowore, Nzenwa accused the former chairman of employing dubious and unconstitutional means to unseat a democratically elected president. How staging a protest against bad governance is unconstitutional is something the party may need to clarify.

While it's presidential candidate in the recent February 23 election still languishes in detention, it seem the party is unmoved, but would rather focus on the next presidential election.

Nzenwa said, “The AAC is poised to take over power in 2023 through the ballot and not through any unconstitutional means. We acknowledge the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful protest against government but we are aware that this constitutional right does not include the right to resort to unconstitutional take over of the government of the country or any part thereof.

“We as law party dissociate the party from any move to unconstitutionally topple the government and any individual who may have done that in the name of the party did so without our consent and clearly did not do so in the name of the party or on its behalf.

How things would play out after Sowore's release would be quite interesting thanks to a recent report by Sahara Reporters. The New York based News outlet owned by Sowore, reported that the AAC had yesterday August 8, raised alarm over a planned convention by some "criminal actors" in the party.

In a statement released by the party on Thursday 8th, 2019, the party said, "criminal actors from the party led by Leonard Nzenwa, who was recently expelled by the National Executive Committee of the party on 27th of July 2019, are planning to stage a convention in the name of the party tomorrow, the 9 August, 2019."

The Party then issued a "formal notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); to all party faithful; to all press houses; and to the general public that no such gathering has been planned or sanctioned by the AAC; and any such gatherings in the name of the party are baseless, criminal and motivated by mischief."
