Mrs Aisha Buhari, the wife of the President, has officially changed her title to ” First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” from "Office of the Wife of the President" as initially declared by the President prior to taking over power in 2015.
Aisha had in 2015 chose to be addressed as "the wife of the president", a decision that caused confusion and mixed reactions among Nigerians.
Her decision was believed to be unconnected with the promised her husband made in 2014, that he will scrap the office of the first lady if elected because it has no role in government.
Buhari had said he will not have an office for first lady if elected since there's no provision in the constitution for the existence of such office, just as there is no official role for presidents’ wives.
But Aisha during an award night and dinner in honour of wives of former Governors at the State House Abuja yesterday, announced the change of her title.
One of her media aides,Bisi Olumide-Ajayi has also issued a statement to announce the change of the official title. The statement said Aisha Buhari is now to be addressed as the “first lady” of Federal Republic of Nigeria.
